It wasn't meant (either originally or now) to be a clever psychological trick (though it's been accused of being that), nor was it intended to be a snide commentary on pointless links. Or dead links, or any of that stuff. It was just an inside joke between the designer and someone else, likely, and we kept it in there, because we thought it was cute. Aww.
